Stolen Words is a book about how a family overcomes their sadness about their Aunt Beth, who died in a car accident with Mom sitting right next to her. The car accident happened because of black ice. Mom is in an especially big depression not only because Aunt Beth was her sister but also because she was sitting next to her in the car when she died.
A girl named Robyn and her family, consisting of her, Mom, Dad, and her little brother Joey, go to Vienna, Austria for a vacation. Robyn has high hopes for their vacation because she hopes that it will help Mom overcome her sadness and brig the family back together.
When they got to Vienna, they went to their first hotel and it turned out to be so beautiful that it was unbelievable. It was a luxury hotel that had golden trims, fuzzy bathrobes and amazing food. Mom still wasn’t talking or smiling so she probably didn’t even care. In the morning Joey wanted to climb a tower, so they did.
They were going to go to another hotel at night, so they took their luggage and left it in the car. When they got back to the car, none of their luggage was there anymore! It had been stolen… They had nothing; all they had was money and credit cards. The worst part about this all was that Robyn’s diary was in there, the one that Aunt Beth gave to her for Hanukkah, only a few months before she died. It was in her bag, that was stolen along with the rest of the luggage.
When they got to their next hotel, it was very crappy, so they went to spend the day with Dad’s friend and his wife. They offered them their farmhouse in the country, and they said ” Yes, please!”
When they got there, it was so old and beautiful! It had big rocking chairs at every window, and there were big rooms, all with very old designs and the wood floor had old knots, that looked like they were from the outside of a tree. It was a real old fashioned farmhouse. There was also a maid who cooked and cleaned!
Dad wanted to go to a glacier, so they did. When they got there it turned out that there was an ice cave! When they went down all of the icy steps, there was a river! There was a boat that took them on a long ride down the river. When it stopped there was another set of steps going up. When they got up, they heard yells and screams from the cave! An elder fell and knocked down everyone like dominoes and all the people started falling down the icy steps. Mom sprang back to life and yelled “COME ON WE HAVE TO HELP THEM!” She pulled Robyn back into the cave and one by one they led all the people that fell in the cave out on to non-icy ground. They were all cold and wet. Robyn and her family all went back to the farmhouse, for their last night there. In the morning they bought souvenirs and then headed to the airport.
I think that the beginning of this family’s vacation was a disaster because they got their luggage stolen, their hotel was bad and Mom wasn’t really talking. Things started changing when they went to the glacier and an elder fell, knocking everyone down. Mom started noticing things that were going on around her.
From 1 to 10 stars I give this book 8 stars because it was not a bad book but it was not my favorite book. I would recommend this book to kids who like stories about families and overcoming hardships.
